What we do EVERY MONTH inside The Songbook Studio:

✔️ Take on one iconic piece from the Great American Songbook - think Gershwin, Ellington, Porter, Mercer - and unfold it slowly, creatively, and at your pace.

✔️ Learn the story and emotional landscape behind the song

✔️ Explore style, phrasing, and vocal interpretation

✔️ Choose your own key and arrangement

✔️ And eventually share your version (if you’d like) inside a deeply supportive space

We aren’t here just to mimic Sinatra or Ella.
We’re here to discover what you bring to the song.

🎤 Confidence that sticks
Not just “I hope I hit that note” confidence—but the kind that lets you walk into a room, own a song, and tell a story that turns heads and touches hearts.

🎼 Musicianship that moves you forward
We go beyond just learning what to sing—we dive into how to shape a phrase, hear the harmony, and bring the music alive from the inside out.

🎶 A repertoire that feels like home
It's not about how many songs you can list—it’s about how deeply you know them. Songs that fit your voice, your story, and your soul. Songs you can perform with ease, connection, and clarity.

💫 A return to joy
Because music isn’t meant to feel like a checklist. It’s meant to light you up. Whether you’re just starting out or rekindling an old flame, we bring you back to the why behind the what—and that’s where the magic happens.

We understand you want…

It's true…

…that the Great American Songbook holds thousands of the most enduring and recorded songs in jazz and popular music history. Yet, most singers only ever learn a small handful.

When you delve into these timeless tunes, you're not just learning songs; you're carrying on the very codes of beauty, lyricism, individuality, and harmony that are woven into their fabric. By exploring the Songbook your way, these incredible pieces become powerful tools for storytelling, building confidence, and fostering your artistic growth.

What Singers are Saying…

FROM KIMBERLY

I’m Kimberly Hawkey - vocalist, bandleader, and lifelong interpreter of the Great American Songbook.

Let’s Be Honest...

Most vocalists are left to figure it out alone.

Which songs to learn.
What key suits your voice.
How to understand form, call a chart, or communicate clearly with the band.

There’s a huge difference between being a “guest singer” brought in for one polished number—and being the kind of vocalist who can confidently lead a set, direct a band, and deliver a show with style, substance, and minimal rehearsal.

And yet, so many singers never get the tools to bridge that gap.

Without guidance, it’s easy to feel like an outsider—uncertain of the language, unaware of the unspoken rules, and anxious when those big performance opportunities come along. You know you can shine... but worry about what you don’t yet know.

That’s exactly why The Songbook Studio exists.
To help vocalists become true musicians—onstage and off—so that you’re not just singing the song...
You’re leading the music.

Over the last decade, I’ve performed on stages across the country, from opera houses to intimate jazz clubs. I’ve toured with big bands, released critically acclaimed albums, and led my own award-winning ensembles. My work has been featured in major publications, and I’ve been honored with national awards for vocal performance and storytelling.

But more than anything, I’m a teacher at heart.

I’ve worked with singers of every level, from complete beginners to recording artists, and I created The Songbook Studio as a space where artistry is felt, not forced.

This isn’t about sounding like someone else.

It’s about returning to your own voice , and using it to tell stories that matter.

If you love the golden age of jazz and want to explore it in a way that feels personal, empowering, and creatively rich… you’re in the right place.
